The Rehearsal "Dead Zone": How to Reclaim Your Podium Time

Every band director knows the feeling. You’re three minutes into a 50-minute rehearsal, and you’ve already lost the room. One student is asking for a reed, another is shuffling through a messy folder for a missing second trumpet part, and you’re staring at the clock wondering how you’re ever going to get through the bridge of the festival piece before the concert in two weeks.

Once I could project a live, syncing clock on the smartboard, the students stopped asking "What's next?" and started asking "Can we get one more rep before the clock runs out?" Then, when the next class came in, I could just switch to the next scheduled blueprint and be ready to teach again!

It turns the rehearsal into a mission. It creates an environment where every second counts, and the students are just as invested in the pacing as you are.
